Student Success Story: Dante

Some of the most valuable career lessons don’t come from a job well done. They come from honest feedback and choosing to grow from it. That’s exactly what happened for Dante, who completed the eight-week Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates (JOG) summer work program in Ashland County, and we couldn’t be more proud of how he handled it!
Collaboration and Other Communication Skills on Display
From day one at his summer placement, Dante made remarkable strides in his core professional skills. He mastered the tricky balance between keeping up with fast-paced tasks and making sure his work was high quality. He also discovered the power of collaboration, learning how to work in small teams and communicate clearly with his coworkers. Dante loved his job site and truly enjoyed his daily duties, and it showed!
At the end of his placement, Dante’s supervisor shared some important constructive feedback. The employer decided not to offer him a permanent job because of three absences during the eight weeks. Dante stayed within JOG’s program attendance limits, but the supervisor explained that the company holds its direct hires to a higher standard.
That’s a tough conversation for anyone to hear. This is where Dante’s Workforce Development Specialist, Ryan, made all the difference. Ryan helped Dante see the feedback as a stepping stone rather than a setback. Together, they talked through what employers expect and how Dante could carry this lesson into his next opportunity.
Dante took the news with maturity and self-awareness beyond his years. He recognized a crucial truth: in a competitive job market, punctuality and consistent attendance are essential for long-term career growth.
Even after a hard conversation, Dante has been as enthusiastic as ever! He’s grateful for the positive experience and the skills he gained this summer, and he’s committed to being outstandingly reliable in his next job.
Dante’s story shows the heart of JOG’s mission: giving young adults both the job skills and the real-world awareness they need to build lasting careers. Through honest feedback, mentorship and hands-on experience, our participants leave the summer program ready to take on challenges and achieve lasting success. We can’t wait to see what Dante does next!
