JOG the Web: Planning for Life After Graduation
Walking across that stage is what you’ve been working towards for years, but what happens next? Whether you’re headed to college, a trade program, straight into the workforce, or still weighing your options, a little planning now goes a long way. Here’s some ideas of where to start.
Start Stashing Some Cash
You don’t need a giant paycheck to start saving, all you need is a bank account! If you don’t have one already, open a checking and savings account, then funnel a little from each paycheck into savings. Even $10 a week adds up fast! A popular method of savings is setting up automatic transfers so you don’t have to think about it, just like autopay on bills. Your first goal should be a small emergency fund of a few hundred bucks. This can save you when a tire blows or a bill pops up out of nowhere. After all, preparing in advance is the best way to mitigate future problems.
If You’re Thinking Trade School
Trade and technical programs are a fast track to solid, in-demand careers. If you plan on pursuing adult trade programs, you need to build a game plan. Some steps that you can take to start today are:
- Scout local options. Polaris, Portage Lakes Career Center, and Stark State College all offer great programs right here in Northeast Ohio.
- Take a tour. Seeing the shop floor or classroom in person tells you way more than a website ever will. You can also meet future professors and faculty this way too.
- Fill out the FAFSA. Yes, it works for trade schools too. Ask about scholarships and employer-paid training while you’re at it! Getting started early on these is a quick life hack that can be the “make or break” for some students.
What if I’m College Bound?
The summer between high school and college goes fast! Stay organized and don’t let deadlines sneak up on you. Apply early, request your transcripts, and knock out the FAFSA. Tour campuses before you attend, and apply for every scholarship you qualify for. local foundations and community groups hand out more than you’d think, and the small ones add up. As Wayne Gretzky once put it, “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
