Student Success Story: Benji

When young people find their purpose early, magic happens. That’s exactly what we’re witnessing with Benji . He is a remarkable 12th-grade student who was recently named Youth of the Year by the Boys and Girls Club of Massillon, and we couldn’t be more proud to celebrate him!

Benji’s journey with Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates (JOG) is a testament to what’s possible when mentorship, opportunity, and determination come together. He has used this knowledge to empower young people that have been in the same position he has been in. Since joining the Boys and Girls Club of Massillon at just 10 years old, he’s transformed from a participant into a leader in his club and his community! He has grown into someone who actively lifts others up and gives back.

From Participant to Leader

What started as a young student finding his place has evolved into something extraordinary. Benji maintained a high GPA while balancing academics, athletics, and community involvement. Talk about a driven work ethic! But, beyond the grades and sports achievements, Benji discovered something more valuable: the power of showing up for others.

Last summer, through JOG, he stepped into a role as a youth employee, gaining real-world work experience and understanding what it means to be part of a professional team. This winter, he went even further by volunteering his time to coach youth basketball, paying forward the mentorship and support he’d received.

This is what leadership looks like at 18. He has been showing up for younger members, reminding them that they matter, modeling excellence through action, and understanding that success isn’t just personal. It’s something you build together with your community.

Benji’s recognition as Youth of the Year comes with a $1,500 scholarship and the opportunity to represent his organization at the state competition. But the real award? It’s the lives he’s already changed and the example he’s set for the next generation.

Looking Forward

As Benji heads off to college this fall to pursue a degree in Sports Management, we know he will carry his JOG Core Competencies and values with him. Whether on a campus or in the community, leaders like Benji remind us what’s at stake when we invest in young people. Congratulations again, Benji. You’re exactly the kind of leader our communities need.
