JOG the Web: Why More Young Adults Are Choosing Skilled Trades Over College

At Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates, we’ve witnessed this shift. Participants are expressing genuine interest in exploring trade careers, curious about apprenticeships, and connecting with employers within those industries.
Skilled trades offer immediate earning potential and clear career advancement. Many apprenticeships pay workers while they learn, allowing young adults to earn a living wage from day one. This earn-as-you-learn model provides financial independence and real-world experience simultaneously. Secondly, demand for skilled tradespeople continues to grow, creating excellent prospects for those entering these fields. Jobs like electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians are essential in every community. These professions also provide something many young adults value: work that produces tangible results they can see and take pride in.
The hands-on nature of trade work appeals to those who learn best by doing. Our work experience programming gives participants the chance to explore skilled trades through real workplace experiences, helping them discover whether these careers align with their strengths and interests.
Through JOG’s programming, we prepare participants by teaching soft skills that employers value. Time management, teamwork, problem-solving, and professional communication matter just as much on a construction site as in an office. Our Career Specialists connect participants with employers in skilled trades and provide the support they need to succeed.
