Staff Interview: Donny

Every day at JOG is different. For Donny, he often arrives with a plan, but always accounts for the real-world needs of his students. He focuses on one constant: showing up with care, respect, and reliability. Donny believes “when students feel seen and valued, they’re more open to the academic, career, and personal support.” Whether he’s guiding job readiness tasks, helping young adults work through challenges, or celebrating wins, that mindset shapes everything he does.
Donny first discovered JOG while working as a building substitute at the same school where he now serves as a Career Specialist. The year before, he had been a Senior Mentor, helping seniors at risk of not graduating complete their OMJ seal. This process had him work closely alongside the then JOG Career Specialist. When she moved into a new role within the organization, she immediately recommended Donny for the position. For him, the timing felt perfect. Stepping into this role allowed him to help young people overcome obstacles, stay in school, and move toward meaningful, livable-wage careers, a purpose that felt completely aligned with who he is.
For Donny, the most rewarding part of his work is being a mentor and positive role model. “We don’t do this job for the paychecks,” he says. “We do it for the meaningful connections.” Whether through guidance, connecting students with resources, or simply listening, there’s nothing more fulfilling to him than seeing the difference he makes.
Through his time with JOG, Donny’s favorite memories all tap into the teamwork and connection the program invites. A recent memory that has stuck with him is winning the balloon tower challenge at the JOG Company Retreat. The speed, teamwork, and fun chaos made for a memorable experience! However, the moment that stands out the most is a message from a participant sharing that she had earned a scholarship to a highly selective program preparing high-achieving, low-income students for top colleges. Being one of the first people she told made him feel that he had truly impacted her journey.
Looking ahead, Donny hopes to bring the “Craftsman with Character” program to Ohio. This program is a semester-long course that blends hands-on job shadowing in skilled trades with character development instruction. This program would open doors for students seeking livable-wage careers without a four-year degree.
With JOG continuously innovating to support students academically, emotionally, and professionally, Donny is inspired by the direction of the organization. For him, being part of a team that helps young people build futures they can be proud of is as rewarding as it is motivating. We are grateful for all of the support that Donny has provided to his classes and staff at JOG, and we look forward to his next creative lesson adventure.
