JOG the Web: Emerging Industries and Pathways in Ohio
What career fields are growing in Ohio? What industries will have openings in the next five years?
In 2024, the job market is ever evolving. Industries that were once booming may not be accepting as many new hires, and some fields are ramping up to new heights. Many JOG participants have questions about the outlook of what is growing. Here are a few emerging careers and in-demand industries that have a positive outlook in our area.
“The Trades”
Trade school is becoming a choice more common among Gen-Z and younger compared to Gen-X and Millennials, so much so that Gen-Z is gaining the nickname “The toolbelt generation.” Careers like plumbing, carpentry, welding, landscaping, and electrical work are all growing in popularity due to open positions, benefits, and the ability to go quickly from the classroom into the workplace! As this trend is only gaining more momentum, the outlook of education programs at community colleges and trade schools are more enticing, especially with some schools offering the ability to enroll during high school and benefit from their low-cost tuition even after high school.
Healthcare
Ohio is home to many of the greatest healthcare systems in the world. From the Cleveland Clinic to University Hospitals and more, there are plenty of top-notch hospital systems to work for. According to SwyftFilings, Ohio’s health care services have the second fastest job growth, with 44.5% projected growth overall. Within such an in-demand industry, there are many positions you can choose from, such as becoming a nurse, a radiologist, dental assistant, massage therapist, and more! Many of these hospitals also offer tuition reimbursement, helping young people balance the high cost of college tuition with their career goals.
Transportation and Trucking
With online shopping only becoming more popular, transporting goods is becoming more and more important. Because of this, many companies like Swift and Prime Inc. offer paid CDL training or tuition reimbursement for certification programs. Another perk of this industry is for people who love to travel and work independently. You get to see different parts of Ohio or even the entire United States!
There are a lot of different ways to pursue an in-demand career after high school or getting a GED, and these are just some of them. From tuition reimbursement, paid training, and more, there are plenty of ways to pursue a great future without breaking the bank. At JOG, we are always looking to set participants up for future successes, and pursuing careers with growing demand is just one way to stay ahead of the curve!
